Whenever I hear a rapid knocking on the trees, I race to my window to find the source.
Suddenly a flurry of bark drops from above. A ladder-backed woodpecker is looking for a snack. It smashes its head impossibly fast, stops and cocks its head sideways, then rapidly munches on a few uncovered bugs.
Two smaller woodpeckers hop around the circumference of the tree, letting out a loud and decisive, “CHIRP.”
Their feathers must have inspired millions of pieces of art. Especially pottery. The woodpeckers look like beautifully painted vessels, dancing through the trees.

When the doves who call our backyard their home get spooked, they fly overhead together to find a new spot to land. Sometimes I’m lucky enough to catch a glimpse on my table, a fleeting moment I couldn’t forget.

I always collect small bits of beauty as I walk. I try not to take anything that damages a plant or is too large: seeds, a pinecone, a hand full of dirt. The sky passes by as I paint.

When my mind races, I create a peaceful scene to escape into. This one is somewhere beneath a cliff, in the shade during a hot summer day. Listening to frogs as they anticipate nightfall.

I was looking at pictures of cells taken by microscopic cameras. It surprised me how each cell seemed to have its own small spirit. Maybe we’re all a collection of small spirits.
